THE EVICTION
Pin the month you want to keep
One building on Broadway, under the J. On the first of every month something leaves apartment 4F, and it ends up on the curb under the el. Wait for a train and the poster on the column turns into a film. Open the mailboxes for the postcards; look through the peephole of 1A and see who is standing behind you. Stand on the doormat and a painting stands up out of the tile. Do not look away from the end of the fourth floor hall. Stand on the mark at the door of 4F: nine metres of railroad flat read as twenty. Tear the calendar, change the channel, touch where a frame used to hang. Walk up to the Landlord's desk and watch him grow. Take a number at housing court, or walk the treadmill forever. Then open the coop on the roof: the pigeons hold up a painting.
