Room 24 of 183 · THE BRONX BALLPARK · 1923

Bottom of the ninth

You are standing on the warning track in right centre with your back to the wall and the whole bowl in front of you: the skin of the infield raked, four towers of light on the grass, forty thousand people in three decks under the white frieze, and a full count in the bottom of the ninth. The New Yorkers hang along the outfield wall where the advertising would be, and every so often the ball comes out to meet them.

Yankee Stadium, the Bronx, the history

This room stands for Yankee Stadium. The original opened on April 18, 1923, on 161st Street, and Babe Ruth hit its first home run that day. It was the first ballpark in the country to be called a stadium. The team moved across the street to the new Yankee Stadium in 2009, and the old site is now Heritage Field, a public park.

What the room is built from

The white steel frieze around the top of the upper deck, the navy padded outfield wall with its yellow line and the warning track, the infield skin and the mound, the black batter's eye in centre field, Monument Park behind it, four light towers, the scoreboard over the bleachers, and the bleachers themselves. Mood: two out, full count. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
