The wooden coaster at Coney Island, the station, the lift hill, the first drop, and the works along the queue and the boardwalk. Press W to take the ride.

The Cyclone opened on June 26, 1927, at Surf Avenue and West 10th Street. Vernon Keenan designed it and Harry C. Baker built it, a wooden coaster with an 85 foot first drop. The city saved it from demolition in the 1970s and made it a landmark in 1988. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and still runs each summer.

The white steel lattice under a wooden track, the 75 foot lift hill with its red CYCLONE letters and the 58 degree first drop, the low station under its roof, the boardwalk, the beach and the tall parachute tower beyond. Mood: boardwalk summer. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
