The mission house

The Flemish Revival landmark at 22nd Street, six floors of limestone over a granite base, dark galleries where the photographs glow, the bar upstairs, the works lit like prints in the dark.

The mission house

Fotografiska New York, the Church Missions House, the history

The Church Missions House at 281 Park Avenue South was built between 1892 and 1894 to designs by Robert W. Gibson and Edward J. Neville Stent, and the city landmarked it in 1979. Fotografiska, the photography museum founded in Stockholm in 2010, opened its New York branch in the building in December 2019. Its galleries are kept dark so the prints carry the light.

What the room is built from

The 1894 Church Missions House in Indiana limestone over a granite ground floor, its corner tourelles running the full height, the second floor arcade and the round arched fifth floor, the black painted galleries with spot lit photographs, the wide stair, the restaurant and the bar upstairs. Mood: park avenue south, after nine. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
