The climb to the crown

The eleven pointed star of the old fort, Hunt's pedestal on top of it, and then the spiral inside the copper: up the armature Eiffel built, past the works hung on the inner wall, to the room in her head under the seven rays of the crown. Ferries come and go below all morning and the gulls never land.

The climb to the crown

The Statue of Liberty, Liberty Island, the history

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, a gift from the people of France. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the copper figure, and Gustave Eiffel engineered the iron frame inside. Richard Morris Hunt designed the pedestal, which stands inside the star shaped walls of Fort Wood. The crown has 25 windows and seven rays, and visitors reach it by a spiral stair.

What the room is built from

The eleven pointed star of Fort Wood, Richard Morris Hunt's granite pedestal, the green copper robe and the raised right arm with the torch, the seven rayed crown and its twenty five windows, the tablet reading JULY IV MDCCLXXVI held across her body, the broken chains at her feet, Eiffel's iron armature and the helix stair, and the harbour with its ferries and the city beyond. Mood: harbor morning. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
