Room 107 of 183 · THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM · 1985

The stone garden

A block of industrial Queens, the concrete block building and the walled garden: basalt and granite standing in gravel under a katsura tree, the open air gallery, the works among the stones.

The stone garden

The Noguchi Museum, the history

Isamu Noguchi designed and opened his own museum in 1985 in a converted factory building across from his Long Island City studio. The galleries and walled garden hold his stone, metal and wood sculpture, his Akari light sculptures and models for his gardens and playgrounds. He died in 1988, and the museum stays as he arranged it.

What the room is built from

The 1920s brick photoengraving plant and its concrete block addition, the open roofed first gallery, the garden paved with granite railway stones, stones among bamboo, katsura, black pines and cherries, The Well of six sided basalt, the paper lanterns hung inside, the raw light. Mood: vernon boulevard, still. Everything is procedural geometry with painted surfaces; nothing is a scan or a photograph. The room is an interpretation, and it hangs the New Yorkers the census recorded at this place first.
