THE SWAP DAYS

Ten days in other hands.

Over ten days every token in THE CENSUS RELEASE was repainted eight times, each time in the hand of an artist who shaped New York, or whose work New York keeps. Each swap lasted a day, then the original came back. Nothing was lost: every version is still on IPFS, and every one of them is on this site.

ONE NEW YORKER, EVERY HAND

No. 1867, The Miracle on the Hudson

The Miracle on the Hudson
The painting

Every census piece opens the same way. On its record and on the atlas, the strip under the painting holds every version.

STYLE SWAP

Every hand inside one picture.

MLow cut 28 Keystone New Yorkers into their parts. Tap the figure, the face, the street or the sky and only that part changes hands, while the rest holds. Paint a hand across the picture, shuffle, and share the exact version you made.

DAY BY DAY

Eight artists. Eight days.

Where Krea had painted a token in the artist's hand, the token wore that. Where it had not, MLow made something that moves. Tap any piece to open its record.

1

DAY ONE

Yayoi Kusama

Kusama lived in New York from 1958 to 1973 and made the city her first infinity. In 2013 the line for her mirror room ran down West 19th Street.

KusaMLow on 646 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. MMosh on 387. Where Krea had not painted a token in her dots, MLow ran it through MOSH LAB instead.

2

DAY TWO

Jean-Michel Basquiat

Before the paintings there was SAMO, the tag Basquiat and Al Diaz wrote across downtown from 1977 to 1980. His first American solo show opened at Annina Nosei in SoHo in 1982.

BasquiMLow on 602 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. MMosh GIF on 509. The tokens Krea had not reached became moshed loops.

3

DAY THREE

Keith Haring

Haring drew in chalk on the black paper of empty subway ad panels, thousands of times, and opened the Pop Shop on Lafayette Street in 1986.

HaringMLow on 653 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. MMosh GIF on 458. The rest became moshed loops, the line still moving.

4

DAY FOUR

Hokusai

Hokusai never saw New York, but New York keeps him: the Metropolitan Museum holds impressions of The Great Wave.

HokusaiMLow on 651 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. MMosh GIF on 460. The rest became layered moshes that move like water.

6

DAY SIX

Salvador Dali

The Persistence of Memory first reached New York at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1932 and lives at MoMA. In 1939 Dali built Dream of Venus at the World's Fair in Queens.

DaliMLow on 655 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. SOFT WATCH GIF on 456. The rest got a melting watch, stopped at 4:20.

8

DAY EIGHT

Pablo Picasso

Picasso never set foot in the United States, yet Guernica was shown in New York in 1939, the year Les Demoiselles d'Avignon came to MoMA.

PicassoMLow on 648 tokens, painted in the artist's hand on Krea. GUERNICA MLOW on 463. The rest broke into a few loud cubist planes. Move to turn them, tap to shatter.

TWO MORE HANDS

Banksy and Warhol, in the library.

THE GALLERY

TEN STYLES. ONE CITY.

Forty two walkable rooms built from the swap days. The Style Machine first, then four rooms for each artist: the street moment, the city wrapped in their hand, a hall built on a real New York show of their work, and a room that could only exist online. Luna Luna at the end.

KEYSTONE AND THE MARKS

Every Keystone and every Mark, in all ten hands.

The 111 Keystone tokens carry all ten styles on chain, beside their glitch, motion and dither versions. THE MARKS were painted in all ten too. Open any of them and the strip shows them all.
